Figure it Out

Twice yesterday, for two completely different reasons, two different people dropped this exact same phrase in conversation: “You just figure it out.”

The first time it was said a little out of context, so it caught my attention. The second time I was like, okay, God or universe or inner voice or whatever you personally believe is the master of “and today’s lesson is….” I hear you.

I don’t feel particularly challenged in this moment to figure something out, but I do feel as though I needed this validation. I *am* actually figuring things out. The decisions I’ve made have brought me to this day and this place, and it’s such a great day and such a cool place (I’m looking at you, Route 66 Raceway, but also metaphorically of course). Where I stand today is proof to myself that I can, indeed, figure it out. When I came into this sport, I was suuuuper green. Ladies and gents, I didn’t know jack. It does not make sense that I was pulled to this and that it stuck. But I knew I wanted it, and yeah man…. I figured it out. Part of that was realizing it’s okay to be a little in the weeds at times, so long as I stayed (as Jason Line would say) directionally correct.

I think for some of us, the hard part is really knowing where you’re going and staying pointed in that direction. There are so many choices, so many things to think about, so many things we want or need to do. Overwhelm is real and consuming. But what if you just pick one target at a time, point yourself at it, and only do that until you’ve crossed the finish line? The simple nature of drag racing is the perfect example. There is a lot of preparation, but ultimately, it comes down to strapping in, looking through the windshield at the target, and hitting the gas. Everything it took to get you to that moment, whether it’s first round or the final, you figured out. You are the proof that you’re looking for. Strap in and do your thing.

See you out there. xo
