When I first started writing for National Dragster in 2007, one of the things I was really excited about was the travel. I wanted as much racing and adventure as possible; I felt like I’d been waiting for it my entire life. I remember my editor, Phil Burgess, telling me that I couldn’t go to all the races because I’d burn out…. and although I quietly suspected he COULD be right, I still did everything in my power to go to as many as I could (for the record, I did not burn out). I loved it so much, and the adventures in between started early and still carry through to this day (if you know me, you know).
This trip to New York City with my co-workers and friends ahead of the 2008 Summernationals is one I will never, ever forget. I had always wanted to see NYC and experience the history and energy of such a place, and I weaseled my way into an early arrival and talked my friends into going with me. I don’t think it was a hard-sell, to be honest. I can’t remember exactly how we got there, but I believe it involved a bus, a train, the free Staten Island ferry to see a statue (see photo of Richard Wong and Brad Littlefield with Lady Liberty), and a LOT of steps.
I loved every bit of it. Especially the slice of pizza at the end of the adventure. I’m grateful I took photos that day because what happened after that was so impactful that I fear this wonderful day *could* have been forgotten. But last night when I was sorting through photos and thinning out boxes of memories, I found these snaps….. and I remembered.
I’ve never not longed for days like this, and when you can share them with friends who match your energy and make you laugh, it makes it even better. xo
